Criminal proceeding was opened against deputy head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Ahtem Chiygoz, press service of Crimea’s Prosecutor General informed.
On January 29, Russian law enforcement officials announced that Chiygoz would be detained for at least three weeks until Feb 19. He faces up to 10 years in prison according to charges of the Crimean Prosecutor.
Chiygoz is accused of participation in pro-Ukrainian rally near the Crimean Parliament on Feb 26, 2014, organizing ‘mass disorder’ and the deaths of two people during the event.
Meanwhile, head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov, emphasized that it was he who arranged the rally.
It should be noted, that Crimea seceded from Ukraine and joined Russia in March, following a local referendum on the region’s status, which was declared illegitimate by international community.
All the events and incidents occurred in Crimea before March 16, 2014 are under the jurisdiction of Ukraine.
