The Crimean Tatar National Council Kurultay has called an emergency meeting after recent developments in Crimea to make decisions on protection of rights and self-determination of Crimean Tatars.

Head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov said that the council will meet on March 29.

As it is known, the overwhelming majority of Crimean Tatars boycotted the referendum on March 16 held by the Crimean Parliament, which nonetheless resulted in the overwhelming majority of Crimeans voting to split from Ukraine and join Russia.

Despite being the natives of Crimea, the Crimean Tatars have had their voices silenced by the ethnic-Russian majority in the peninsula, who took over Crimea after the Crimean Tatars were completely exiled by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in 1944.
