Ukraine, as non permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2016-2017, will hold the Presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of February, 2017. Within that role the Ukrainian Mission has placed the indigenous Crimean Tatar flag and symbols within United Nations Security Council Room, according to the USA Representative of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ayla Bakkalli. Last time Ukraine presided over the Security Council in March 2001, during its non-Permanent membership in 2000-2001.
“Crimean Tatar flag will guide our staff in taking on immense tasks, one of which will be to improve transparency, effectiveness and efficiency of the Security Council whose Permanent Members are Russia, USA, China, Britain and France,” Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko said.
Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations on Indigenous Matters Ayla Bakkalli conveyed her profound wishes to Ukraine in its endeavor as President and shared the honor of placing the Crimean Tatar flag alongside with the Ukrainian one within the Permanent Mission of Ukraine and at the Security Council.
