The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States in a message with a selection of data from the World Fact Book of the CIA congratulated the participants of the quarterfinal matches of the 2018 World Cup, including Russia, and published a map of the Russian Federation on Twitter. However, Crimea was indicated as a Ukrainian territory on the map.
"Russia is the largest country in the world and its Kamchatka Peninsula is home to 29 historically active volcanoes," reads the message.
Russia was indignant with the map without the occupied Crimea and urged the US to update their map.
"Congratulations accepted, CIA. Please update your map of Russia and statistics,” the Russian Embassy in the US wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, the American edition Bloomberg published a map of Ukraine without the Crimea. In an article devoted to elections in developing countries of the world with a market economy, Crimea was not indicated with the color, which depicts the rest of Ukraine.
