Chubarov urges EU to impose oil embargo on Russia

Mejlis Chairman Refat Chubarov believes Western countries should introduce tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation by imposing an oil embargo on it.

During his visit to Berlin, Mejlis Chairman and Ukrainian MP Refat Chubarov called on the EU to increase pressure on the Russian Federation. In an interview with Gromadske TV he said:

“We need to convince the international community to get tougher on Russia, so it starts feeling the pressure [...] amidst increased repression against the Crimean Tatars".

He went on to say that excluding Russia from the global SWIFT banking transactions system and imposing an oil embargo might also be effective. According to Chubarov, the embargo may also apply to other fossil fuels Russia exports.

It was reported earlier that a Russian court recognized the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people an extremist organization and banned it in the Russian Federation. EU officials condemned the decision callingt another attempt to put pressure on the Crimean Tatars.
