Head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people attended the UN World Conference on Indigenous peoples, which took place September 22 in New York, the United States.

During his speech Chubarov asked UN to create special mission in Crimea, determining legal and other mechanisms of it permanent presence in the region.

Chubarov noted that Crimean Tatar people support the idea of creation special body of UN, to support, protect and report about the exercise of rights of indigenous people by the government, emphasizing that “Regarding Crimea, amid the circumstances that threat the safety and life of Crimean Tatars, we cannot wait until such body is created”.

“We call on the UN to create special mission in Crimea, determining legal and other mechanisms of it permanent presence in the region”- the Mejlis head said.

Chubarov also thanked Ukraine for joining the UN declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples and for giving Crimean Tatar people status of indigenous people of Crimea.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia had appealed to UN to ban Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Jemilev and head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov from attending the event. The appeal, however, was rejected.
