When asked whether the Muftiyat would be established in mainland Ukraine, Refat Chubarov, Head of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars and Mejlis Chairman, who attended a press briefing preceding the opening of the 3rd meeting of the Executive Committee of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars, said the following:
“Establishing the Muftiyat in mainland Ukraine is not the Congress’s prerogative. However, matters relating to organization of religious life of Crimean Tatars and Muslims may be discussed during the today’s meeting. Mufti of Crimea, who gets elected by Crimean Tatars, used to coordinate all these activities but now that Crimea is under occupation there is no such opportunity. What is even worse is that organizations established by Crimean Tatars or Muslims living in Crimea have absolutely no way of operating freely in Crimea today. Therefore, there is a need now for establishing an organization responsible for coordinating actions of Crimean Tatars and Muslims who moved to mainland Ukraine due to occupation or who have long been living here, such as those of theme who reside in the town of Genichesk. I think the question will be settled in a matter of weeks but not here. The decision will be made by the Mejlis of Crimean Tatars”.
