February 27, 2016. Mejlis Chairman Refat Chubarov joined several dozens people, who gathered near the Independence Monument at the Maidan square to pay their last respects to Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov who was murdered a year ago.

In an interview with QHA, Chubarov said he had known Nemtsov for more than 10 years.

“I could not fail to attend this gathering because I knew Boris Nemtsov personally. I talked to him about Crimean Tatars, Crimea, Ukraine and Russia. We met in 2004 but were not close friends. However, we did meet on a couple of occasions to discuss important matters. He was a very honest man. Russia represented by Yeltsin made a big mistake because if he had chosen Nemtsov to be his successor (and he was a potential successor), Russia would be a different country today and our relations with it would be different, too. But what’s done is done: Yeltsin made the worst choice. Putin and Nemtsov are two absolutely different people. Boris Nemtsov loved Russia, its people and its neighbors,” said Refat Chubarov.

Boris Nemtsov was killed on the Large Moskvoskvoretsky Bridge on February 27, 2015. The murderer shot him in the back several times before making off in a grey ZAZ Chance car. Убийца
