Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people considers the refusal of Crimean authorities to conduct the Flag Day in Simferopol city center discrimination of Crimean Tatar people.

Head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov announced June 23.

“We consider unmotivated refusals of Simferopol City Council [to hold the Flag Day in city center,-ed.] discrimination policy towards Crimean Tatars. According to Russian laws, society may conduct mass events in city center”- Chubarov said, adding it is not the first time, when Crimean Tatars are banned from holding mass actions.

“It is not the first time, when Simferopol authorities do not agree the appeals, submitted by Crimean Tatars. And the most cynic attitude toward Crimean Tatars was demonstrated on the eve of May 18mourning events, when we were not allowed to conduct all-Crimean mourning rally in Simferopol central square”- he noted.

According to Chubarov, when banning such kind of event, authorities separate Crimean Tatar society.

“Ban to conduct mass events in city center means segregation of Crimean Tatars. The authorities cannot allow some people to hold mass actions and ban it to others. They do not want Crimean Tatars to use the city’s infrastructure, its central squares, and opportunities. It is segregation of Crimean Tatars”- he stated.

Crimean Tatar Flag Day is sheduled for June 26.

According to Russian laws, all the mass events should be agreed with the authorities.

Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people appealed to Simferopol City Council to conduct Crimean Tatar Flag Day at Simferopol central Lenina square, but were refused.

Instead, Crimean authorities proposed to move the event to Ak Mechet district of Simferopol, area of compact residence of Crimean Tatars.
