Turkey decided to expel the Bulgarian consul in Istanbul Zornitsa Petrova Apostolova after the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry had not responded to Turkey's demands to rescind its decision to expel a Turkish diplomat, Hurriyet daily news edition reports.

In response, Turkey has also announced Apostolova persona non grata and asked her to leave the country.

“The situation represents widening gap between Ankara and Sofia at a time when Bulgaria, unlike the EU, maintains close ties with Moscow,” the Hurriyet daily news reports.

Just a reminder: Bulgaria declared Ugur Emiroglu, Attaché with the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey in Burgas, undesirable person.

The formal reason for this decision was his engagement in religious activities, which is incompatible with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
