Missile destroyer Ramage and control ship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet Mount Whitney entered the Black Sea, foreign media reported Monday by citing a military-diplomatic source, according to Ukrinform.
On January 20, the Pentagon stated that they are ready to send ships to the Black Sea for security during the Olympic Games in Sochi. The agency representatives stressed that the ships will come directly to the coast only in the case of a request from the Russian authorities, which was not yet received.
The Sochi Olympics will be held from February 7 to February 23.
As ABC News reported, both ships could be used to potentially evacuate Americans from Sochi in an emergency situation. Both are relatively small vessels equipped with a helipad capable of accommodating a small helicopter.
As informed, Russia has deployed tens of thousands of security forces to the area surrounding Sochi to counter any potential terrorist threat to the games by Islamic militants.
