In Simferopol, unidentified individuals ripped down posters of the Cathedral Mosque from the fence put up around the mosque’s construction site on the night of November 19-20.
The warden, who discovered the damaged posters at around 6 a.m., believes they got torn down between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. because he did his last walk around the site at 5 a.m., reports the press service of the Spiritual Administration Of Crimean Muslims.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The Spiritual Administration of Crimean and Sevastopol Muslims and Sevastopol urges fellow Muslims to keep calm and stay unaffected by such acts.
“We believe that was a provocation aimed at triggering some kind of response or stirring up resentment within the Muslim community at the least. Because what happened is an act of disrespect towards the Cathedral Mosque Muslims of Crimea have been looking forward to for more than 10 years. The mosque is, therefore, of special significance to them,” said Deputy Mufti of Crimea Ayder Ismailov.
This is not the first time something like this has happened. In late September 2015 a similar incident occurred on the site soon after a launching ceremony inaugurating construction works took place.
The posters of the Cathedral Mosque were put up on the fence prior to the ceremony, which was held in Simferopol on September 25.
