The President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov passed away at the age of 79 in Tashkent, August 29, 2016. He ruled the country for over 26 years, reported "Fergana" citing its own sources.
According to the newspaper, Karimov's died at around 3-4 p.m. Tashkent time (1-2 p.m. in Kiev). So far, Uzbek authorities have not provided any information in this regard.
Aug 28 Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan said that President Karimov was hospitalized. Later Karimov's daughter reported that he suffered a stroke. According to her, his condition was stable.
Karimov has been holding presidency since 1990. In 2015 he was re-elected for another seven-year term with 90.39% of votes. Prior to Karimov was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Uzbek SSR, Chairman of the State Planning Committee of the Republic, as well as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan since June 1989.
