Muhammad Hidirov, an imam of the village of Kurush of the Hasav’urt district of Dagestan, has been shot dead while returning from a prayer this morning, TASS reports.
A criminal probe has been launched into the murder as per Section 2 of Article 105 (murder committed by a group of individuals) and Section 2 of Article 222 (illegal possession of firearms by a group of individuals) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
A statement expressing condolences has been published on the website of the Spiritual Administration of Crimean Muslims. The statement reads:
“The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Crimea and Sevastopol and Haji Emirali Ablayev, Mufti of Crimea, extend their deepest condolences to the Spiritual Administration of Dagestan Muslims, fellow believers and next of kin of Muhammad Hidirov, an imam of the village of Kurush of the Hasav’urt district of Dagestan. Killing an imam, i.e. a scholar, is acknowledgement of one’s ideological defeat and inability to match him ideologically. This is abject cynicism unjustifiable by any religious excuses”.
