An eight-year-old child was killed in the area of the anti-terrorist operation in Slovyansk, Donetsk region, on Sunday.
Donetsk Regional State Administration confirmed this report to the Ostrov online newspaper.
According to the report, the child died of shrapnel wound.
The regional administration said that this was the first death of a minor since the outbreak of hostilities in Slovyansk.
Rebels held the Ukrainian government responsible for the rising number of civilian casualties in the conflict, while Ukraine insisted that the pro-Russian rebels are responsible for the bloodshed.
Ukraine's new president, Petro Poroshenko, was sworn into office, calling for armed groups to lay down their weapons and promising amnesty for those "without blood on their hands."
