The US-Japanese company Westinghouse will increase the supply of nuclear fuel to Ukraine. This, in turn, will reduce the dependence of Ukrainian nuclear power plants on Russian fuel, Jeffrey Payette, the US Ambassador to Ukraine, said at the 13th International Forum ‘Fuel & Energy Complex of Ukraine: Current & Future’. He also mentioned that the increase in fuel supplies to Ukraine does not mean the displacement of Russian suppliers from the Ukrainian market.
This year, almost all the fuel has been supplied from Russia. Nevertheless, Ukraine is going to buy over 1/3 of the fuel for its nuclear power plants from the US-Japanese company. The first batch of the Westinghouse’s fuel is expected to be loaded in the 5th unit of Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Station.
According to UNIAN, the cooperation between National Nuclear Energy Generating Company ‘Energoatom’ and Westinghouse began in 2000.
