Ukraine keeps on strengthening its position of an independent state, as it has already reduced agricultural trade with Russia to historic lows, says Aleksey Pavlenko, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine in a statement quoted by the press service of the Ministry.
According to the report, in the first half of 2015 the export of agricultural products to the Russian Federation decreased to 2%. In the first half of the last year, Ukrainian food export constituted 8%, i.e. the drop in export is 80%.
- The strategic importance of the Russian market for Ukraine is nothing but the Soviet atavism. Unpredictability, artificial constraints, meat and dairy trade wars, blockade of our confectionery products conduced Ukraine to focus on the European, Asian, African and American markets long ago. Successful diversification helped to compensate for lost profits from exports to Russia, said Aleksey Pavlenko.
However, Alex Pavlenko also said that on January 1, 2016 Ukraine is to enter Ukraine-EU Free-Trade Zone.
Earlier on, the QHA news agency reported about the decision made by the government of the Russian Federation on the expansion of the list of countries subject to trade restrictions imposed on the supply of agricultural products and foodstuffs to Russia. According to decision, in case the economical part of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement comes into effect, the import of the food products into the Russian Federation will be completely restricted.
Taking into account the fact that Russian Federation is self-sufficient by not more than 60%, it is not clear how the Russian authorities intend to compensate for the loss of a major food supplier.
