Crimea have blocked the assets of the main directorate of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) in Crimea worth about UAH 4.6 billion, including UAH 3.9 billion in cash, reads a statement posted on the NBU website, according to Ukrinform.
"Late on May 8, a group of armed men came to the building of the main department of the National Bank of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and blocked its activity. The gross amount of blocked assets is about UAH 4.6 billion, including UAH 3.9 billion in cash," reads the statement.
The statement notes that those who blocked the institution's activity included representatives of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Crimea, law enforcement and judicial authorities that explained their actions by the need to perform a writ of May 8, 2014 under case No. A83-120/2014 of the Economic Court of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
"This writ was issued in violation of Ukrainian law and is not enforceable by the National Bank,"- NBU said.
The blocking of the work of the NBU office in Crimea prevented the payment of social assistance to Ukrainian citizens, including financial assistance to WWII veterans envisaged by the state budget.
