KYIV (QHA) -

The Director General of the Energy Directorate of the European Commission Dominique Ristori stated support to Ukraine's position on the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2. He made a corresponding statement during a briefing after the meeting with the Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Ihor Nasalyk.

“Our position is clear: We believe that Nord Stream 2 does not contribute to the diversification of sources and routes of gas supplies. It will not be financially supported by the EU, "he said.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed the state of reforming the energy sector. Nasalyk expressed gratitude to the European colleagues for consistent support of reforms in Ukraine and stressed the special importance of expanding the existing strategic partnership in the energy sector with the EU.

"We will continue to support Ukraine in reforming the gas and electric power sector, building the capacity of an independent regulator and in the Ukraine's further unbundling. This will definitely allow attracting investors and building partnerships with companies in Europe," the European official said.

Previously, the Finnish authorities give way on the construction of the Nord Stream-2. The gas pipeline will be built in the exclusive economic zone of the country. If the appellate body does not appeal the permission of the government, it will remain in effect for 50 years.

Ristori believes that the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline contradicts the principles of the European Union and will not contribute to the diversification of gas supply routes.

Russia intends to launch the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline in 2020. Moscow plans to build it on the bottom of the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany. Russia has already stated that after the launch of the gas pipeline, it will several times cut transit gas supplies through the Ukrainian gas transportation system
