Jamala shared this news with her fans on Facebook. According to the singer, this song is very important and personal for her.

- I wrote it last year. I was inspired by my great-grandmother’s story about the tragedy that happened to our family and to the Crimean Tatar people in 1944. My great-grandfather was at the front and couldn’t protect her and their children. Thus, for a few weeks they were forcedly carried to Central Asia being crammed like cattle in the boxcars. Those who could not stand these inhuman conditions and died of hunger and thirst were simply thrown out from the train on the road. My great-grandmother also lost one of her daughters during this trip, said the singer.

The artist also added it is very important for her that more people in Ukraine and abroad get to know about this story.
