Crimean Tatar becomes state language along with Russian and Ukrainian

SIMFEROPOL (QHA) - New constitution of Republic of Crimea was adopted April 11 in Simferopol.

The Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages retain the status of state languages alongside the Russian language under the new constitution of the Republic of Crimea.

Any other suggestions, submitted by Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people, in particular, recognizing the Mejlis as a higher representative body of Crimean Tatar people, are not included in the constitution.

The document also does not envisage quotas for the participation of Crimean Tatars in government bodies.

The republic’s authorities suggested earlier a 20 percent quota for Crimean Tatars.

“There are no legal grounds for any quotas in Russia. Elections to government bodies in the Russian Federation are held on an equal basis, without any privileges for ethnic reasons,”- Grigory Ioffe, deputy chairman of the State Council said earlier.
